Mandar Marathe

UK-based Consultant in Emergency Medicine and researcher in classical Arabic rhetoric

Mandar Marathe is a British doctor and researcher whose work spans Emergency Medicine, Arabic studies and the quantitative analysis of classical Arabic rhetoric. He is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Leicester and a doctoral researcher at SOAS University of London.

Medicine and academic background

Marathe studied Biomedical Sciences and Medicine at the University of Southampton, qualifying as a doctor in 1999. He subsequently specialised in Emergency Medicine and has been a consultant in the specialty since 2009. His medical career has included work in the United Kingdom, Qatar and Australia.^[1]

Alongside medicine, Mandar Marathe pursued formal study of Arabic. He completed a BA in Arabic at SOAS University of London, including study at the Qasid Institute in Amman, followed by an MA in Advanced Arabic at the University of Exeter.^[1]

Research into Arabic rhetoric

Marathe's research brings together quantitative methods and the traditional Arabic discipline of al-balāgha, or rhetoric. His doctoral work at SOAS concerns the novel quantitative linguistics metric known as Rhetorical Density, and the BALAGHA Score - a digital-humanities approach intended to measure rhetorical density in Arabic texts. His research has included the development of methods for identifying rhetorical devices and comparing their density across texts.^[1]
